Subject outline
Representation and the Readymade. In this subject students consider the principle of representation in art, comparing realism and the tradition of working from the object, with the Modernist concept of the objet trouve, and the Postmodern concept of suture. The interdependent roles of craft and concept are thus highlighted in discussions of contemporary and historic artworks. Students are required to identify these issues in their own cultural practice, employing a critical vocabulary to develop a reflective approach towards their practice in the development of a folio of work in their chosen disciplines.
