Subject outline
Students are introduced to fundamental questions in the study of politics. What is a state? What is a nation? What are the origins of nationalism? Students examine how state-building and industrialisation have influenced the formation of national identity and how nationalist movements and international factors have influenced the formation of states. In this subject we draw on a number of case studies, from European and the Asia-Pacific region, and link these case-studies to theoretical discussion of states and nationhood. This subject is particularly recommended for students in second year.
