Subject outline
This subject is a prerequisite for students wishing to proceed to an honours degree in politics, but is not restricted to such students. It is designed to introduce students to some of the most important events and ideas which have shaped the course of twentieth century politics through the writings of that era's key political thinkers and social critics. In completing this subject, students will gain an insight into the history and underpinnings of totalitarianism, communism, racism, liberalism, democracy, feminism and recognition, and will become familiar with the ideas of such influential thinkers as Hannah Arendt, George Orwell, Juergen Habermas, John Rawls and Michel Foucault.
