Subject outline
This subject will provide students with an updated analysis of the contemporary international relations of the Greater Middle East. This term indicates a broader region, which approximately extends from Sudan to the border between Iran and Afghanistan. Students will be presented with detailed descriptions of the main regional political process (the advancement of radical Islam, the strengthening of authoritarianism in the Arab republics and the crisis experienced by the Iranian revolution), in-depth analyses of the region's main conflicts (Iraq, Israel/Palestine, Sudan), and with comprehensive outlines of the main state (regional states and external powers, including the United States and China) and non-state (Hamās, Hezbollah, and more secular segments of the newly emerging Arab civil society) that play key roles in the complex Middle Eastern political arena.
