Subject outline

The subject is in two separate but related parts. The first part covers classical mechanics using the approach pioneered by William Hamilton, which produces symmetrical systems of differential equations for which the symmetry properties provide an aid to solution and analysis. This approach to classical mechanics provides the foundation for a study of quantum mechanics, the theory of microscopic systems, which is studied in the second part of the subject.
