Subject outline
Law, Justice and Power is a core subject for second year students undertaking a major in Legal Studies. In this subject, students focus upon the complexity of individualised, institutional, governmental and disciplinary power, as well as the relationship between law and justice in society. Students critically examine the role that law plays in regulating behaviour, resolving disputes, redressing harm and facilitating social change. The limitations and potential of law for securing just outcomes is considered through a study of: criminal justice, civil law, restorative justice, therapeutic jurisprudence, as well as the role of the state in perpetrating crimes and/or addressing human rights issues. This subject utilises a range of interdisciplinary approaches in criminology, sociology and gender studies to provide students with an appreciation of the limits and complexities involved in law as practice and as a 'language of power'.
