Subject outline

In this unit, students with prior knowledge of conflict resolution explore how theory and practice might be applied to impove the management of international disputes. Theoretical contributions from cognate disciplines such as social psychology, international relations, politics and international law will be considered. Power, rights and interest based approaches to conflict will be re-visited within the international arena. Frameworks for understanding structural and direct violence will aid in further understanding international conflict and addressing terrorism. Case studies of particular conflict situation will be presented during the course and students will be able to choose an international conflict to research, analyse, map and present to the class, along with recommendations for intervention.
