Focusing on writers as diverse as Charlotte Smith, William Wordsworth, Jane Austen and Lord Byron, this unit will explore such topics as: the rise of the novel; the influence of the gothic on romantic literature; Romantic celebrity culture; and the impact exerted on the literature of this period by the discourses of sensibility and the sublime. Students completing this unit will have developed an understanding of a number of key romantic texts, and of the contexts out of which these texts arose.
