Subject outline
Principles of biomedical organisation and management are introduced. There is emphasis on the contemporary practice of clinical engineering, with involvement of senior practicing biomedical engineers. Biomedical safety issues and applicable international standards for electrical safety are highlighted. Biomedical engineering systems such as equipment for anaesthesia and intensive care, electro-surgery, implantable stimulators and dialysis systems are discussed. Included are topics on cardiac assist devices (pacemakers, defibrillators and cardioverters), central monitoring stations and ambulatory monitoring. An introduction is made to typical biomaterials, electrical/mechanical/structural properties, implants, biocompatibility and tissue interactions, corrosion and absorbability.
