Subject outline
Students examine competing models and explanations of the factors influencing second language acquisition (SLA) and development, (i.e. any language learnt subsequent to the first language). Theories about the possible paths of language acquisition are explored, as well as the historical development of theories. The relevance of research findings for assessing and teaching second or foreign languages are considered. Students are expected to be able to read new SLA research literature, place it in a theoretical context and judge the relevance of the findings. Students are expected to have developed a principled basis for the consideration of classroom-based interlanguage development in a second or foreign language, use appropriate teaching methodologies and to be able to participate as researchers in SLA.
