Subject outline

'Plant Science' outlines the origins of modern plants, how they work, and how they have been modified by human interactions. Topics covered include: plant evolution from single-celled ancestors to modern land plants; plant symbioses with animals and microbes; structure and function of flowering plants; agricultural applications in the past and future, including modern plant biotechnology; and the origin and current role of plants in the Australian landscape (with emphasis on vegetation distribution and adaptation, e.g. in deserts, grasslands and tropical rainforests). Practical demonstrations and investigations in the laboratory and the field complement the lectures.
