Complaints or grievances

If you have a complaint or grievance about the University you can get help from the ombudsman.

What is an ombudsman?

An ombudsman is someone who investigates complaints or grievances from students and staff, and attempts to resolve matters informally. The University Ombudsman acts as a mediator between you and the University, and is unbiased.

What can an ombudsman help me with?

You can get help from the University Ombudsman for any academic or administrative complaints you may have about the University. For example:

  • An international student was denied a Letter of Release (to attend another university). This student can go to the ombudsman for help with appealing this decision.
  • A staff member was not given a promotion. This staff member can go to the ombudsman to have this investigated.
  • A student was discontinued/excluded from a course due to poor academic performance. This student may go to the ombudsman to appeal this decision.

If you have a complaint or need advice about harassment (sexual, physical or social) please see the Equality and Diversity centre.

Who can get help from the Ombudsman?

Current and past staff and students of La Trobe can get help from the University Ombudsman.
