Living out of home

If you are looking to move out of home at some point this year then take a look at this information below. Whilst it is not exhaustive, we really recommend you check out the links provided as they contain important information particularly on your rights. In addition, La Trobe University has on-campus accommodation – we have provided the link below to their website.

Check out the video below and hear what some of our new students in 2011 thought about their living arrangements.

Student Accommodation and Housing

Students often move from one accommodation type to another as their needs and circumstances change. For example, you might start your studies living on-campus before moving into a share house.

Whatever your situation, it is worth examining the various options before you sign a lease or pay any money.

There are six housing options that students typically choose from:

  • homestay (boarding)
  • on-campus accommodation
  • student hostel accommodation
  • rooming house accommodation
  • share house accommodation in private rental
  • renting alone in private rental

The first two options above, homestay and on-campus accommodation, are not covered by the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA) 1997, which is the law that covers the rights and responsibilities of tenants and landlords in Victoria.

Information on housing options, your rights and responsibilities and on other tenancy issues can be found on:

Further information on housing and accommodation can also be found on the La Trobe International website. This information is relevant to all students.

Residential Services

La Trobe offers affordable on-campus accommodation Melbourne and Bendigo as well as off-campus accommodation options close to each of our other campuses.
