There are three Schools in the Faculty:
- La Trobe Business School

These schools undertake important research within their discipline areas and contribute to a host of national and international conferences.
Within La Trobe Business School there are four departments:
- Department of Management
- Department of Marketing and Tourism and Hospitality

As a Faculty, we have continued to expand our international focus, forming partnerships with universities in Asia and Europe, as well as nationally. Our overseas student exchange program provides opportunities for our students to expand their horizons, both personally and academically, while our study abroad options grow our diverse university culture.
We are leading the way with many Australian first courses, such as our postgraduate degrees in 'Islamic Banking and Finance', 'Corporate Social Responsibility', our undergraduate degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics, and a unique, compulsory first year Dispute Resolution subject for law students.
Our MBA and our Bachelor of Business (Tourism and Hospitality) have been awarded EPAS accreditation from the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD).This is the first MBA program in Australia to be recognised by the EFMD, which is one of the leading global accreditation bodies in the field of business and management, offering an assurance of quality and excellence.
In addition to leading courses, teaching and research, the Faculty offers language and academic skills and work integrated learning tools to help our students achieve their best academically and develop practical experience and networks vocationally.
We look forward to assisting you to achieve your educational and career outcomes.

Timetabling
A full-time enrolment is normally 120 credit points (or eight subjects) per year. Each Faculty of Business, Economics and Law course has a grid available that will help you track your progress and which subjects are required throughout your degree. Course grids are available online here or you can pick up a hard copy from the Faculty Student Services Office.
Information on lecture and tutorial/seminar times can be accessed here.
All you need to do is enter the subject code and the campus. Once you are enrolled you are automatically in your lectures as the times advertised through the above site.
Tutorials are sometimes called ‘Seminars’. These are usually larger interactive classes. You will need to select your tutorial/seminar times in the first week of semester. This is done through OASIS. It is important that you select tutorials (or seminars) that do not clash with any of your lectures or other tutorials.
If you need further help with timetabling, you can get assistance at the Timetable Drop-in sessions run during Orientation. You may also like to talk to your Connect Mentor about timetabling tips.
Support
The Faculty of Business, Economics and Law recognise the difficulties that can be experience in your first year at University. Even if you have studied at Uni or TAFE before, it can be a big change.
To help you adjust to your new surroundings and the community of La Trobe University we offer a number of support resources within the Faculty.
Student Support Office
The Student Support Office is located within the Student Services team. They specialise in assisting students at all year levels who have personal or academic difficulties that are affecting their studies. They are available for one-on-one confidential meetings and can help with navigating University policy, Course counselling and providing referrals to other university services. See Important Faculty Contacts for further details.
Bridgeworks
Bridgeworks is a program of essential academic skills tutorials, including academic writing, speaking, research and calculation. Participation in these tutorials will help you to succeed in your degree subjects. They are targeted at understanding your assessment tasks and developing the skills you need to pass and do well in these subjects.
Connect Mentoring Program
The Faculty of Business, Economics and Law have joined forces with Student Engagement and other faculties to offer a more comprehensive peer mentoring program. The program is designed to assist new students to meet others in their course/faculty. The use of more experienced students as mentors will help to guide new students to feeling more comfortable with the campus life and facilities available. They can provide a ‘been there done that’ perspective to the First Year Experience.
Academic Language and Learning Unit (ALL)
ALL works closely with teaching staff in all Faculties and campuses to ensure that all La Trobe students – including those from non-English-speaking backgrounds – develop high-level academic speaking, writing, reading, and numeracy skills required for successful learning in their courses.
To achieve those ends, ALL staff:
- collaborate on course and subject design;
- advise on teaching and learning strategies;
- teach/co-teach special undergraduate and postgraduate subjects, tutorials and workshops;
- provide professional development for staff.
For contact information, visit the Faculty's current students site.

FAQs
I have specific questions about my course
Comprehensive information for each Course can be found on the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law Course and Subject information webpage. If you still have questions, please contact the Faculty Student Services Office on flmstudentadmin@latrobe.edu.au or phone: 03 9479 1667. You may also like to visit the office on level 2, Donald Whitehead Building, between 9am and 4.30pm, Monday to Friday (10:30am-4:30pm on Thursdays).
What is a First Year Experience Coordinator?
The First Year Experience Coordinator is available to assist with any issues that might arise in your first year of Uni. They specialise in knowing what students experience through the transition period and coordinate various programs to help you settle in. The Faculty of Business, Economics and Law First Year Experience Coordinator is Sophie Marsland. She can be contacted on s.marsland@latrobe.edu.au or (03) 9479 2665.
How much study is expected of me outside of class?
Although it can be tempting to only study during your contact hours, this is not enough time to gain the knowledge you require to succeed in your studies. It is generally recommended that students spend approximately 10 hours of study for each 15 credit point subject. This includes your lectures and tutorials. That means if you have three hours of classes a week, you would be expected to do seven hours of study in your own time. If you are doing four subjects, you can now see how this is considered full time as you would need to spend 40 hours studying each week.
Can I study via Distance Education?
Although the majority of courses are designed to be studied on campus within the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law we are increasing the number of Online subjects available. An increase in flexible learning modes means there are some subjects within courses that can be studied off campus.
How can I apply for Leave of Absence (LOA)?
A leave of absence is an approved break in your study, usually for a maximum of two semesters. An application for a Leave of Absence (also known as Intermission of Studies), can be made prior to the census date of the relevant semester.
Can I study part-time?
All Undergraduate courses in the Faculty are available in part-time mode. However, some subjects (particularly Law) will have strict pre-requisite requirements and may affect your study plan. It is best to contact the Faculty Student Services Office for advice on part-time study.
How do I change the Subjects I am enrolled in?
You are able to add or substitute subjects in the first two weeks of semester either via StudentOnLine or by completing a Variation of Enrolment form (VoE) and submitting it to the Business, Economics & Law Student Services Office. If you wish to remove a subject, this can also be done via StudentOnLine or VoE prior to the relevant census date. Withdrawals after this date may incur financial or academic penalties. You cannot withdraw from a subject once the academic period in which it is being taught has ended.
What is LMS?
LMS is an internet based Learning Management System to allow you to obtain learning materials and activities related to your studies from any location with internet access. This online component is used to compliment your lectures and tutorials/seminars within our courses.
How do I enrol into my tutorials?
All tutorial enrolments are through OASIS (Online Automated Scheduling Information Software). OASIS is opened during the first week of semester for students to log in and select their preferred tutorial time. It is advisable that students plan their timetable before logging on to avoid clashes. You will need your LTU username and password (the same that is used for LMS, StudentOnLine and the Library) to login to OASIS.
I am experiencing personal difficulties that are affecting my studies, what should I do?
It is highly important to contact us as soon as possible. The longer you leave an issue the worse it is likely to get. The Faculty of Business, Economics and Law has a Student Support team dedicated to assisting students facing difficulties that are affecting their studies. If you are experiencing academic progress issues, personal difficulties, or require advice on university policy and procedures relating to special consideration etc, please make an appointment through the Student Services Office. Individual private consultation is available. You may also like to talk with the University Counselling Service.
Are there extra tutorials I can take to further improve?
Bridgeworks is a program of essential academic skills tutorials, including academic writing, research and calculation. Participation in these tutorials will help you to succeed in your degree subjects. They are targeted at understanding your assessment tasks and developing the skills you need to pass and do well in these subjects.
