The Ready4Uni quiz is designed to give you answers to these questions and more. The Ready4Uni quiz is not a test, and you won't receive a mark for it. The quiz is designed to get you to think about what to expect when studying at university. The quiz asks you to select "true" or "false" for each question, but it's not about getting the "right" answers. In fact, some of the questions have neither true nor false answers but are somewhere in between.
After you have answered each question, you'll be shown a written response, prepared by staff from the Academic Language and Learning Unit (ALLU), with information about the academic issue raised in the question. These responses contain links to further information you can access to assist you with your studies.
You'll also see a video response to the question from later year La Trobe students. These students share their experiences of academic study in first year, pointing out some of the traps to watch out for and giving you advice on how to be successful in your studies in first year. They point out a range of services you can access and approaches you could try to help you have a smooth transition to first year study.
We have included a couple of "taster questions" on this page to give you an idea of the sorts of questions in the Ready4Uni quiz. You won't be able to answer them here (as you will when you take the full quiz on LMS), but you'll get to see the written responses and the video responses to the questions from current students.
Taster Question 1
At university, it’s important to be an independent learner. This means I’m on my own, and I shouldn’t ask for help if I have a problem with my studies.
Answer
While it is true that you need to be an independent learner, it’s not true that you shouldn't ask for help. If you need help, you should always ask! The university has a number of services available to help first year students.
- The Connect Mentor Program matches you up with a later year La Trobe student, who can help you to settle in and find your way around the university.
- There are many information sessions and activities provided in Orientation Week which can help you with the transition to university.
- The Library has many useful services and people to help you find information for your assignments.
- The Academic Language and Learning Unit website shows you how to get help with your studies.
- La Trobe has a free counselling service for students.
Finally, you can always ask for help from course advisors, your lecturers, tutors or demonstrators, and also from your fellow students.
So there’s plenty of help and advice available at university. You just need to know where to look.

Taster question 2
Each of my subjects has its own online site where I can find up-to-date information, learning materials and activities.Answer
This is true. The University has a Learning Management System (LMS), and each of your subjects should have an LMS space where you can find information about assessment tasks, study topics, links to learning materials and readings. Many subjects have a discussion space where you can post questions and discuss what you are learning about. You should log into LMS every day to check for new announcements and materials.
To log into the LMS
To log into the LMS, enter your username and password (make sure your user type is "students") and click "log in". You will see a screen with the list of subjects you're enrolled in. You will also see two other subjects AIM (Academic Integrity Module) which all students must complete, and the Ready4Uni quiz for your faculty. Ideally, you should complete the Ready4Uni quiz before your lectures start in week one, but you will have two weeks after that to complete it.
