Welcome message

Welcome to the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law, La Trobe University’s Faculty of business and the professions. We offer courses at La Trobe’s main campus in Melbourne, as well as at our four Regional campuses across Victoria: Bendigo, Albury-Wodonga, Shepparton and Mildura.

There are three Schools in the Faculty:

  • La Trobe Business School
  • La Trobe Law School
  • School of Economics

These schools undertake important research within their discipline areas and contribute to a host of national and international conferences.

Within La Trobe Business School there are four departments:

  • Department of Management
  • Department of Marketing and Tourism and Hospitality
  • Department of Finance
  • Department of Accounting

As a Faculty, we have continued to expand our international focus, forming partnerships with universities in Asia and Europe, as well as nationally. Our overseas student exchange program provides opportunities for our students to expand their horizons, both personally and academically, while our study abroad options grow our diverse university culture.

We are leading the way with many Australian first courses, such as our postgraduate degrees in 'Islamic Banking and Finance', 'Corporate Social Responsibility', our undergraduate degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics, and a unique, compulsory first year Dispute Resolution subject for law students.

Our MBA and our Bachelor of Business (Tourism and Hospitality) have been awarded EPAS accreditation from the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD).This is the first MBA program in Australia to be recognised by the EFMD, which is one of the leading global accreditation bodies in the field of business and management, offering an assurance of quality and excellence.

In addition to leading courses, teaching and research, the Faculty offers language and academic skills and work integrated learning tools to help our students achieve their best academically and develop practical experience and networks vocationally.

Welcome message

Congratulations on being accepted into your course in the Faculty of Education! You have worked hard to get here and I am pleased to welcome you to the Faculty of Education, La Trobe.

This may be your first university experience, or it may be you have changed directions or are starting a new degree. Whether it is your first time at university, your first time at this university or the beginning of a new course it will be a time of change, of excitement but also probably some nervousness.

Take time to read and view the material provided for you here, in orientation week and during the semester. Don’t worry about asking questions, even if they seem inconsequential. It is by asking questions and wondering that we learn. The academic and administrative staff are willing to assist you negotiate your way around the buildings, paperwork, timetable and other aspects of your study.

Spend some time exploring the other university and faculty resources available for you. I know it may be tempting to avoid reading the numerous student and subject manuals you will be provided. However, it will be time well spent as they provide useful and important information to support your learning this year.

During the year the First Year Experience Coordinator for your campus academic unit will provide important information to you through your La Trobe email account, and through the university online learning system. Please ensure that you check your LTU email inbox regularly as this is main mechanism for communicating important university and faculty information to students.

For further information about the Faculty of Education, including its academic units please refer to the Faculty’s website.

All the best for the year ahead.

Welcome message

Congratulations on being accepted into your course!

Coming to university is often associated with big changes in your life - new activities, new friends, and new responsibilities. For some of you studying means moving away from family and friends, and finding a new place to live. Maybe your studies have brought you to live in Australia for the first time. Maybe you're juggling study and a job, and caring for family members as well. Whatever your personal circumstances, there are times when you may need some support. It's good to know that help is available. Within the Faculty and around the uni there are support services available to you.

University is an important time to explore your personal interests, and to meet others who share your passions. You'll find that your hobbies and activities outside of work / study can connect with and enrich your University studies in surprising ways. Extra-curricular activities can open you to new intellectual interests, and can also be a way to put into practice some of the ideas you first met in the lecture hall or library.

Spend some time exploring the other resources available to support you. The Faculty of Science, Technology & Engineering Survival Guide contains useful information, as do the Faculty and University websites. I know how tempting it can be to avoid reading the numerous student manuals you will be provided. However, I would encourage you to at least dedicate some time to reading through this Survival Guide as it provides useful and important information to support your learning this year.

Please ensure that you check your LTU email inbox regularly as this is main mechanism by which we communicate important information to students.

On behalf of all the staff in the Faculty, I hope you enjoy your first year experience and I wish you every success with your first year studies this year.

Tania Blanksby

First Year Coordinator, Faculty of Science, Technology & Engineering

Don't get lost - Get the Lost on Campus App

Lost on Campus

Worried about getting lost on campus? Well don't be! Besides the Campus Map included in your Orientation Program, La Trobe University is featured on the Lost on Campus App - available for Apple iOS users in the App Store, Android users from Google Play and in a mobile web-friendly format.

Vision Impairment and Auslan information

Connect Mentor Program

The Connect Mentor Program is a peer support program designed to assist you with your early transition to La Trobe University. Prior to Orientation you will be assigned to a Mentor Group of between 10 to 20 students and allocated a Connect Mentor who studies the same course or is in the same faculty as you. Connect Mentors are students in second year or above who have been carefully selected and trained to provide you with support in your transition to university.

Your Connect Mentor will contact you via your student email before Orientation to give you information on where to meet them. Refer to the box on the inside cover of the Orientation Program to find out how to access your student email. If you don’t hear from your Mentor before Orientation, just drop in at your designated faculty marquee on Tuesday 26 February at the time listed below and our Mentors will help you.

Your Mentor will take you on a tour of the campus with other students you will be studying with.

Throughout the first six weeks of semester, your Mentor will maintain regular contact  with you so you can ask questions or have a chat with other members of the group about how you are settling in. Connect Mentors are not academic advisors, but can offer firsthand knowledge on the student experience at La Trobe. They can point you in the right direction for appropriate services, resources and other avenues of support.

TIP – Connect Mentors will be wearing colour coded t-shirts according to their faculty, so check the list on the first page in the Orientation Program and look for people wearing t-shirts in your faculty colour on the day.
