How to defer your offer

If you are going to defer you do not need to enrol.

How to defer

  • Local applicants must complete an official letter of deferral (available in [PDF 556KB] or [DOC 41KB] which can be found on page 25 in the Enrolment guide [PDF 4.5MB]. You will be mailed written confirmation of the outcome of your request for deferral within 20 days of your request being received.
  • International students must send a written request.
  • Single subject enrolments – please contact your faculty directly for instructions.

Who can defer?

Undergraduate

Six month deferment is permitted in the Faculties of Business, Economics and Law; Science, Technology and Engineering; and Humanities and Social Sciences except for the Bachelor of Arts/Arts Education, the Bachelor of Arts/Health Sciences, the Bachelor of Visual Arts and the Bachelor of Graphic Design. Six month deferment is not possible for courses offered by the Faculties of Education or Health Sciences.

One year deferment is permitted in all undergraduate courses at the University with the exception of: the Bachelor of Health Science/Master of Dentistry; the Bachelor of Nursing (Graduate Entry) and the Bachelor of Nursing (Division 2 Conversion).

Two year deferment is permitted in all undergraduate courses at the University with the exception of: the Bachelor of Health Science/Master of Dentistry; the Bachelor of Nursing (Graduate Entry); the Bachelor of Nursing (Division 2 Conversion); the Bachelor of Visual Arts; and the Bachelor of Graphic Design.

Postgraduate

Six month deferment is permitted in the Faculty of Business Economics and Law. Six month deferment is not permitted for postgraduate courses within the Faculties of Education; Health Sciences; Humanities and Social Sciences; and Science, Technology and Engineering.

One year deferment is permitted in all postgraduate courses within the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law, with the exception of the MBA, and for Graduate Entry Teaching courses. One year deferment is not possible for all other postgraduate courses within the Faculties of Education; Health Sciences; Humanities and Social Sciences; and Science, Technology and Engineering.

Two year deferment is not permitted in postgraduate courses at the University.

Anyone seeking deferral outside the Faculty guidelines (outlined above) should write directly to the faculty Academic Services Manager, formally requesting a deferral outlining the rationale and providing supporting documentation (if relevant) for consideration. Requests will only be considered for significant extenuating circumstances.

Please note: The course offerings of the University are under continual review. Students applying for Deferment should take into consideration that a course from which they take leave may be revised or discontinued, or may cease to be accredited, during their period of absence. In these circumstances, every attempt will be made to provide the original program. However, where this is not possible the University reserves the right to offer the student a place in an equivalent or near-equivalent course instead of the place in the specific course from which leave was taken.
