Information for staff
Working with teaching staff is a priority for the ALL Unit. Embedding academic skills within subjects remains a most effective way to achieve success for students, as indicated below.
The Unit also would like to encourage teaching staff to refer students to the resources in the study skills, postgraduate and campus/Faculty support pages of this Academic Language and Learning website. This may be done through reference in lectures or tutorial classes, or by individual advice, especially as just-in-time support.
There is also an online form for referring individual students with substantial language and learning issues to ALLU staff.
Arranging in-class ALLU support
The staff in the ALL Unit have been developing collaborative projects with teaching staff to embed academic skills within subjects.
The staff are committed to this process as it is recognised as the most likely way in which students will pay attention to the development of their academic literacies.
It is understood that time within class is heavily subscribed by the need to fit in the curriculum. At the same time including segments to teach skills does increase the likelihood of better performance by the students.
Please talk to the ALL Unit staff in your area to undertake in-class skills sessions.
Working with ALLU staff on assessment design
The staff of the Unit have extensive experience in developing students' academic abilities. As a consequence, they have built up significant understanding of the issues that can cause confusion and problems in assessment setting.
A short discussion with a member of the ALLU staff can assist in setting assessments which reduce subsequent student enquiries.
