Student responsibilities
(See: Academic Integrity Procedures, 2010, pp. 4 - 5)
Cite your sources
- Observe in all respects the ethical approaches to learning that the University and its faculties foster.
- Declare in work submitted for assessment all printed, electronic, graphical, artistic work, and other kinds of sources from which you obtain material or ideas.
- Do this in ways approved by the discipline, school and faculty in which the assignment is set, e.g. through footnotes, endnotes, textual references or other devices.
Work responsibly with other students
- Write your assignments independently, except when asked to work on a project as a member of a group which is to submit a joint report as equal contributors.
- When submitting work as a group, except where the final written work consists of sections for which particular individuals take sole responsibility, the group as a whole must assume responsibility for the work and the proper acknowledgment of any use made of the words or ideas of people outside the group.
- Ensure that you do not knowingly or carelessly make your work available to other students in any form.
Learn how to avoid plagiarism
- Consult and use the guides and information provided by the University on the avoidance of plagiarism.
- Take part in sessions (whether on-line or face to face) on plagiarism avoidance and learning programs provided by the University to enhance your writing and analytical skills.
- Read and comply with the Statement of Student Responsibility shown on the University’s LMS.
- Use text-matching software appropriately, including as a learning tool to check for potential text-matches before turning in work for assessment.
- Do not submit your own academic work for assessment when it has already been submitted for assessment at another time (including at another institution), without the express permission of the academic staff member who will assess it.
- Consult with staff when in doubt about any matter where plagiarism is or may be involved.
Remember: keep copies of all assignments you submit for assessment.
Statement of Student Responsibility on the LMS
By submitting any piece of work to the Learning Management System (LMS) you agree that:
- the work is your own work or the work of the group;
- you have not previously submitted all or part of this work for assessment in any subject, unless the subject coordinator for the current subject (or your research supervisor, if applicable) has given you written permission to reuse specific material and you have correctly referenced the material taken from your own earlier work;
- you have read and agreed to be bound by the Statutes, Regulations and Policies of the University relating to Academic Misconduct; and
- you may be subject to student discipline processes in the event of an act of academic misconduct including an act of plagiarism or cheating.
Plagiarism means the reproduction of someone else's words, ideas or findings and presenting them as your own ideas without proper acknowledgement and includes:
- direct copying or paraphrasing from someone else's published work (either electronic or hard copy) without acknowledging the source;
- using facts, information and ideas derived from a source without acknowledgment;
- producing assignments (required to be independent) in collaboration with and/or using the work of other people; and
- assisting another person to commit an act of plagiarism.
You further grant to the University or any third party authorised by the University (e.g. Turnitin) the right to reproduce and/or communicate (make available online or electronically transmit) the work you have submitted for the purpose of detecting plagiarism.
