What does the Infinity Leadership Program involve?

Maja:

The program involves a two day retreat, where we had speakers talk to us about various topics, some of them included group facilitation, cross-cultural communication, leadership skills, and a few others, and we also got a chance to meet the other students that were part of the program. We also had guest speakers throughout the semester and they spoke about their experiences and their stories about their journey to leadership, which gave us a chance to reflect upon our own sense of leadership and what we know about it. And finally we had a community project which we had to complete which gave us great hands-on experience.

Why did you join the Infinity Leadership Program?

David:

I think the first major appeal for me was I wanted to sort of build my resume but I wanted to do some extra-curricular activities so I was, you know, looking for the best possible program and this entered my inbox. So I saw it and I saw the opportunity to do a community program. Also it was really appealing for me 'cause I needed some community work as well and I think also, you know, having that leadership component was very important because I really wanted to build on my leadership skills.

Maja:

I wanted to strengthen my leadership skills and learn new skills and I wanted to develop my potential as a leader and achieve my goals.

Mai:

The main thing is that I like to have a chance where I can experience what leadership skills is like, a situation where I can have a group of team members and actually, being able to engage in to some sort of activities with them. Maybe sometimes we can have some sort of conflicts that we also have to work together which is different from group assignments at university levels.

Stephanie:

I think I really just wanted to engage in university life a bit more and I felt like I hadn't done anything for a while and I would like to advance my leadership skills so I thought why not give it a go and, yeah, it's just been a really great experience and I've learnt a lot of new stuff.

How have you benefited from the Infinity Leadership Program?

Mai:

After working on the project I feel more confident presenting myself in front of a group of people. I learnt how to demonstrate my leadership skills and delegating tasks to other people, motivating people in achieving a certain goals and also how to co-operate with different peoples come from different backgrounds and different study faculties, so people with different skills, and we try to match them all together to achieve the same goals.

David:

The leadership seminar we did was very motivational I think, that not only sort of helped me develop my skills but also served a good emphasis for me to keep studying when I was a bit flat. And it was good, the lecturers that talked to us really, you know, promoted, you know, keep at it even when you're feeling flat, so that was important, and also I think actually doing the community project, I sort of saw those leadership skills sort of flourish a little bit. I didn't realise that I'd take such initiative and things like that so it's taking me out of my comfort zone and I think that was really important.

Stephanie:

I think the program has really expanded the way that I look at leadership, like before I had a pretty constrained idea of what a leader did and how you can inspire people to do things, but I think that the program has actually given me different ways and methods to inspire people and go out there and actually give me the skills to make my own projects happen.

Why would you advise other La Trobe students to join the Infinity Leadership Program?

David:

The most important thing about uni is not just to study but also get involved in the extra curricula activities and this was such an awesome one. It looks fantastic on a resume and, those leadership skills are so important. That's what employers are looking for these days.

Stephanie:

I think it's very important to get a well rounded university education and that means getting involved in extra curricular stuff like the program. And the program teaches you so many new things, you get to experience some of the best leaders in our communities talking to you and giving you their tips and guidance, and above everything, it's fun, you know, getting to meet new people, get out there and make a difference in your community.
