Winter school in Shanghai
Conditional offer of University subsidies ($1,000 per student)!

La Trobe Law School, in cooperation with Shanghai University Law School, will offer a Winter School Subject – Introduction to Chinese Law in Shanghai in January 2013. Enrolment will be limited to a maximum of 30 for 2013. Available to all La Trobe students and non-La Trobe students via cross-institutional enrolment. University sponsorship ($1,000 per student) is likely to be available to approved applicants – early enrolment is essential!
Introduction to Chinese Law (LAW2ICL)
In this Subject students will be introduced to the basic concepts and structures of Chinese law and their politico-economic and administrative context.
Its coverage includes:
- a general survey of legal culture and legal development in China
- a general introduction to the legal system/institutions of the PRC
- structures and principles of Chinese constitutional, administrative, civil, and criminal laws
- law-making and sources of law
- methods of rights protection
- foreign trade and investment, and
- mechanisms for dispute resolution
The Subject is offered as a La Trobe Law Elective and will be taught through an intensive two-week program including classes conducted at the University, field trips and sightseeing in and around the city of Shanghai. The Subject is open to all La Trobe University students (all campuses), as well as students from other institutions and practitioners (via cross-institutional enrolment).
Assessment
(1) Class participation: 10%
(2) A research essay – 4,000 words (including footnotes) in length: 90%

Each enrolled student will get a free copy of the textbook before the trip to Shanghai.

Touring
Shanghai University Law School will organise tours in city and neighbouring areas of Shanghai.
Fees and Costs
The total cost of the Program is made up of a tour fee, Subject enrolment fees airfares, and other costs (eg taxes, spending money, insurances and associated medical costs, etc).
Tour Fee
The tour fee in 2013 is $1800, which will cover the following costs:
- accommodation for the duration of the study tour
- food
- airport transfers in Shanghai (for those travelling with the group)
- entry to all tourist sites organised by Shanghai University Law School
- coach travel to and from tourist sites organised by Shanghai University Law School
- textbook
Subject enrolment fees
This Subject attracts all applicable enrolment fees, including the General Service Fee and whichever one of the following fees applicable to your enrolment:
- Upfront HECS/CSP (Band 3)
- Deferred HECS/CSP (Band 3)
- Tuition Fees (ie Undergraduate fullfees, Postgraduate upfront fees, International student fees)
- Single Subject/Non Award fees
As a guide, return airfare to Shanghai will cost around $1,400-00.

Please note that the above fees and costs do not cover the following:
- spending money
- travel insurance
- visas
- medical insurance
Sponsorship
University sponsorship ($1,000-00 per student) has now been approved in principle for a limited number of places. Early enrolment is therefore essential.
About the Mobility Grant
The University Mobility Grant will not fund students to participate in mobility projects in their home country. This means that international students whose home country is China, will not be eligible for the grant.
