eduroam help

Help for La Trobe staff visiting other institutions

Why is my authentication failing?

Authentication failures occur when your username and password do not match. eduroam requires a very specific username format:

NOTE: The username is NOT your email address.

Why am I continually prompted for my password?

Most of the time, this is caused by a poor wireless signal. Your wireless device needs to transmit and receive a signal. The signal strength displayed on your device only shows the received signal strength. Having full signal strength displayed on your device does not mean that the other end can receive your signal. Try moving to a location closer to an access point.

If your signal strength is full and you are close to the wireless access point and still experience problems, then it is most likely a problem with the institution’s DHCP server.

When trying to connect to eduroam, why do the settings show as invalid?

Invalid settings occur quite often when moving between institutions. This is caused by a mismatch between the security setting on the profile and what is being offered by the wireless access point.

La Trobe ICT does not have control over these settings. Each institution manages their own security settings on their network.

Currently there is no standard on how each institution setup their wireless security.

Most institutions use WPA2-Enterprise but they are using a different type of encryption. The easiest way to fix invalid settings is to try changing the “Encryption type” under the security settings.
