How to prepare your student visa application

General information

If you need to renew your student visa to be able to complete your degree or study other programs in Australia, you must submit an application for visa extension with the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC).

You must begin the process to submit an application to extend your student visa at least two months before the expiry date of your current visa.

International student visa holders must submit a completed Electronic Confirmation of Enrolment Request Form (PDF 218KB) and must attach supporting documentation within the following time frame:

  • two months from your student visa expiry date, if applying for a student visa offshore
  • two months from your student visa expiry date, if applying for a student visa onshore (Australia).

Electronic Confirmation of Enrolment Requests submitted early will be held and processed three months before the student’s visa expiry date for offshore students and one month before the student’s visa expiry date for students in Australia.

Please note:

  • A new
  • CoE will not be issued until the results of the current semester are released, so an accurate assessment of your program completion date can be made.
  • Sponsored students will need to obtain a new Financial Guarantee from their sponsor before a new CoE can be issued.
  • US Financial Aid students will need approval from US Financial Aid Officer before an update CoE will be created.

How to apply for a students visa

There are two ways to apply for a student visa:

  • Online (preferred by DIAC) – follow the instructions to complete the online application and attach required documentation. You can save your application and continue at a later time if you don’t have all documentation to submit at one time.
  • In person – complete Form 157A (PDF 39KB) - Application for a student visa and lodge application at Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC).
