Academic writing improvement workshops
Writing your essays and assignments at university can be frustrating and confusing. Dr Craig Horton from the Academic Language and Learning Unit is offering a four-week program of assignment writing workshops designed especially for the needs of undergraduate students in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences whose first language is not English.
Note: Duration of the workshops is one hour.
Dates / Location
Workshop dates for 2013 will be provided shortly.
Week One – Expectations. This workshop will address the writing conventions and standards expected of students across the Faculty and provide strategies to avoid some common errors in writing and referencing.
Week Two – Getting off to a good start. This workshop will show students how to accurately read and understand assignment topics and instructions, how to start researching and perform effective note making for assignments.
Week Three – I know what to say…but where do I say it? This workshop will examine effective strategies for planning the structure of an assignment and writing a clear, coherent introduction.
Week Four– Am I finished yet? The final workshop will explore strategies for reviewing, proof reading and editing assignments as well as ensuring the assignment is properly referenced.
Students do not need to enrol in these workshops. Simply turn up. There is NO extra reading or homework and no text books to buy…but please bring the learning guides for each of your subjects.
