Your feedback is important to us!

student looking at laptopWe appreciate you taking the time to let us know what you think about the subject you are completing this semester. Student Feedback Surveys will be available for a selection of subjects from the 8th October to 26th October 2012 when you log in to LMS.

By filling in the student feedback survey you can help us improve the quality of the subjects at La Trobe University.

Below is an overview of previous student feedback we have received about our subjects and the changes we have implemented to improve the quality of those subjects.

Changes Made in Response to Feedback
NSG2CAD - Clinical Assessment and Decisions
  • The structure of the subject on LMS was too complex and confusing to follow.
  • Recording the lectures would be beneficial for revision.
  • Lecture notes were not available early enough.
  • Unable to concentrate in lectures that go for 2 hours.

  • Subject site on LMS has been restructured in an easy-to-follow weekly format.
  • Clear instructions have been provided that direct students in what they need to do each week.
  • Online lectures have been provided and face to face lectures have been reduced.
  • Lectures do not exceed 1 hour.
NSG4_5CHA - Comprehensive Health Assessment (fully online subject)
  • Students asked to read too many lengthy readings.
  • The word length of the 3x written assessments was too limiting.
  • There was confusion around assessment due dates.
  • Student workload requirements were underestimated.
  • Students needed more human interaction.
  • Some web links were non-functional.

  • The purpose of each reading was reviewed.
  • Clear instructions were provided for students explaining which sections of an article were to be read and how the reading is linked to learning outcomes for the subject.
  • The written assessments were changed to 2x longer written assessments to allow more in-depth discussions
  • Clear instructions are provided by each stream coordinator in a section “Course Specific Content” explaining assessment due dates.
  • Each learning module was reviewed and content modified to ensure the correct “Estimated Student Workload”
  • Blackboard Collaborate was introduced for students who did not have a face to face component in their course.
  • Permalinks (created by university librarians) were used to ensure links to readings and websites were monitored and functioning.

NSG4NPC - Prostate Nursing Care
  • Students who had not studied for many years, found it difficult to write assignments.
  • Students were unfamiliar with the library and how to access information.

  • Links have been added to the LMS page which takes them directly to resources in the library - for example the health sciences library literacy modules.
  • Students receive an email early in the semester encouraging them to contact the subject coordinator for assistance in assignment writing.
  • An ‘assignment queries’ forum on the LMS site has been created to encourage discussion among the students.
  • A marking criteria rubric is given to students with detailed feedback on areas for improvement. Comments and links to useful resources are also provided in the feedback for students.

Master of Nursing (Breast Care) and Master of Nursing (Cancer/Palliative Care). Distance Education
Studying via Distance Education is associated with a sense of isolation.
  • Blackboard Collaborate was introduced to address students’ feelings of isolation. The sessions focused on allowing students to meet, greet and discuss ideas and assessments.
  • An interactive session on literature searching was offered to students via Blackboard Collaborate, to assist students to write a literature review.
  • The use of Blackboard Collaborate has been extended to allow students to continue to interact with other students in real time.

NSG5CPD - Clinical Practice Development
Useful links on LMS were not available for students until after their assignments were submitted.
The LMS subject page was restructured so that all the relevant information and links were located at the top of the site. This made them more visible to students.
The assignment drop box became the last item.

NSG2MIN - Medications in Nursing
Students asked for a calculation exam practice quiz.
Two additional practice exams for drug calculations were included in the workshop sessions.
NSG4_5CAU - Clinical Audit
This is a fully online subject, but students wanted to talk with other students (in real time).
  • Blackboard Collaborate tutorials were introduced and recorded.
  • Students were given the opportunity to have discussions with their peers across Australia in real time. Those students, who were unable to attend, could listen to the recordings when it suited them.

NSG3CIN - Interactions in Nursing
The written assessment requirement was too long and repetitive.
The written assessment was restructured to be less repetitive and the word limit was reduced.
MID3NEO - Neonatal Midwifery Practice
The block week timetable structure did not allow students the opportunity to discuss the online modules.
  • The timetable was restructured to allow students the opportunity to work through the online content and discuss online module topics each week.
  • The new structure also allowed students to engage in a revision session covering all subject content via a Case study approach.
