Course transfer information

For students planning to apply for transfer into courses in the Faculty of Health Sciences

2014 Applications will open approximately September 2013

The Faculty of Health Sciences has an Internal Transfer policy [PDF 48KB] (currently under review for 2014) which clearly outlines the rules applicable to a student enrolled at La Trobe University who plans to apply for an internal transfer into another course administered by the Faculty.

Many students entering the first year program in Health Sciences at La Trobe University do so seeking to apply for an internal course transfer to their desired course at the end of their first year.  Detailed information pertaining to internal course transfer data from the end of the 2012 academic year can be found in this Internal Course Transfer Data [PDF 273KB] document. This should be read in conjunction with the internal course transfer information provided on this page.

Please note: Students currently enrolled at La Trobe University within the Faculty of Health Sciences and who are not due to complete their course of enrolment by the end of 2013 must not apply for transfer via VTAC or UAC as an offer will not be made. Students within the Faculty and who are not due to course complete must apply via an Internal Course Transfer only.

The following is a list of Core First Year undergraduate courses that are open to course transfer applicants. * Applicants currently enrolled in these courses who are seeking transfer into another Category C course must complete all seven core first year subjects prior to application.

Students wishing to apply for transfer into other Health Sciences courses may be required to complete an additional Supplementary Information form.  Information regarding these courses and their respective Supplementary Information forms will be made available via this web page prior to the opening of 2014 applications.  Hard copies will also be available via the Faculty of Health Sciences Student Administration Reception area on your local campus.

There are three types of internal transfer students as detailed hereunder:

  • Category A: Students who transfer from a course which does not have a structure incorporating the full seven core first year subjects (non-core course) to another non-core course;
  • Category B: Students who transfer from a non-core course or a course which has a structure which only incorporates some of the core subjects (partial core course) into a course which incorporates the full seven core subjects (full core course) or vice versa;
  • Category C: Students who transfer between full seven core first year subject courses which both have structures incorporating the full seven core subjects.

Students planning to apply for transfer should carefully read the Internal Transfer policy [PDF 48KB] (currently under review for 2014) and ensure they complete the correct application form/s. These forms will be available electronically via this web page as well as hard copy from your local Health Sciences Student Administration Reception just prior to the opening of 2014 applications.

  • Category A, B and C students need to complete the University Application for Course Transfer form.
  • Some Category A & B students may also need to complete a discipline specific supplementary information form that will be available electronically via this page and in hard copy at your local Faculty of Health Sciences Reception area;
  • Category C students need to also complete the Faculty of Health Sciences' Application for Internal Transfer of Course Supplementary Information form and a Commonwealth HECS-HELP & SAF form which will be made available at the Health Sciences reception.

Students who are unsuccessful in their application for internal transfer are advised to consider alternative entry points to your preferred course, such as the Graduate Entry Masters (GEM) program.

Category C students should particularly note the following points within the policy:

"8. Where under point (6), the number of students exceeds the number of available internal transfer places, and those students achieve the same WAM, the course will rank students according to the mark(s) they achieved in specified first year subject(s). The subject(s) will be specified by each course and made known to the students (see table below)."

"9.  Students in category C, who have completed more than 120 credit points in their current course of enrolment, may be considered for an internal course transfer prior to the expected completion of their current course however, selection will be based on the WAM derived from completion of the seven prescribed first year subjects only.  Results obtained post completion of the prescribed first year will not be considered.”

"10.1  Students in category C, who have received advanced standing (credit) for any of the Core First Year subjects, will be assessed for course transfer eligibility based on a recalculated WAM that incorporates grades received for previous studies in which credit has been granted.”

'10.2 Students in category C, who receive advanced standing (credit) for previously completed pass/fail subjects (i.e.: do not have numerical grades) for any of the core first year subjects, will have only the numerical grades achieved in the Core First Year La Trobe subjects used to calculate the WAM;

As referenced under point 8, the following table outlines the subjects per course that will be used to rerank applicants should the need arise.  These subjects are listed against each course below as are the Student Services Officer’s contact details are also provided should if you have any further queries about your transfer application:

** Inherent Requirements - Bachelor of Health Sciences/Master of Speech Pathology English Requirements

Students should be aware that the Speech Pathology course has substantial oral and written English language requirements. It is an inherent requirement of the course that students admitted to the program possess high level English skills – sufficient to model correct English in all its forms (both written and spoken). In most of the academic subjects and in all clinical placements throughout the course, it will be assumed that students have met this requirement.

As a guideline, the following levels of achievement can be considered to meet a minimum level of English skill:

  • a study score of at least 30 in VCE English, English Language or Literature
  • an overall IELTS score of at least 7.5 (with no subtest below 7)
  • at least a B grade in final-year-of-secondary school English (obtained in a state or country where the English language is the medium of instruction)

Any student who is unsure if their level of English meets this requirement should contact the Course Coordinator in the Department of Human Communication Sciences for advice (Dr Susan Block, E: s.block@latrobe.edu.au, T: 9479 1801).

Information sessions for Faculty of Health Sciences’ Core First Year students (Category C)
