About

Connect Mentor Program

The Connect Mentor Program has been designed to provide support to all new students in their transition to La Trobe University. The program utilises current students (Undergraduate and Postgraduate) as Peer Mentors to support new students.

The aims of the Connect Mentor Program are to:

  • Connect new students with other students they will be studying with
  • Introduce new students to their learning communities
  • Enhance student success and the overall student experience
  • Link new students to university services and resources
  • Improve the retention rate of new students at La Trobe University.

What is Peer Mentoring?

Peer Mentoring is a mutually beneficial relationship which involves continuing students guiding and assisting new students to successfully transition into university.

Mentors are not academic advisors, tutors, or counsellors.

Mentors offer a supportive relationship to new students (mentees), encouraging a sense of independence, and act as guides, assisting the mentee in identifying the correct resources to solve or deal with any issues or problems that may arise.

The role of Connect Mentors

Connect Mentors are matched up to groups of 10-20 new students based on what course they are studying and what faculty they belong to. Connect Mentors are expected to:

  • Participate in a Connect Mentor Training Program session prior to Orientation Week
  • Attend Orientation Week and meet with a mentor group to welcome new students to the university and conduct a campus tour
  • Provide ongoing support to students, face-to-face and via email and other forms of communication throughout the first six weeks of the semester.
  • Participate in the evaluation process at the end of the semester
