How much do students usually borrow?
About $1000 for course-related materials and equipment. There are limits to the amount you can borrow.
What can I borrow for?
Course-related materials and equipment such as text books and computers. In special cases, you can borrow for travel for research and placements. You will need to prove what the loan is for and that you can repay it.
When do I have to repay?
From 1–30 months but usually 6–12 months. If you change your enrolment, you may have to pay back the loan straight away.
Is there any interest on the loan?
No.
Can anyone be my guarantor?
Ask someone you have known for over 5 years. They must:
- be over 21 years
- be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, residing in Australia
- not be a La Trobe University staff member
- not owe the University money
- not be a student.
How long does it take for my loan to be approved?
Up to 4 weeks (longer if your application is missing information).
How long does it take to get the funds after approval?
1–2 weeks (longer if your application is missing information).
