Law honours program

Law studentsThe School of Law offers a unique honours program in Victoria. Theses of exceptional quality have been published in key national journals and some have been cited in Australian law reform measures.

Within the Bachelor of Laws program, honours is generally undertaken as part of the final year of law studies. It is not an additional year, as in the case of most other degrees such as the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science. The honours year is by application and is usually determined after completion of the second year of studies. It includes the research and writing of a 10,000 word thesis (which counts as two law electives) on a topic to be approved by the Honours Director. Students enrol in Law Thesis Part A (LAW4THA) in Semester one and Law Thesis Part B (LAW4THB) in Semester two. Students must also attend a one-hour fortnightly Honours Seminar.

Further Honours course information is available on the La Trobe Law School site

Combined degree Honours

Students enrolled in a combined degree may undertake honours in either degree or both degrees. In some combined degrees, where there is a large fixed-content, students intending to undertake honours in law may be required to consult the Director of the Law Program early in their studies about how to accommodate honours within their existing degree structure.
