When you begin your studies at La Trobe, you will start to hear the term Turnitin from your tutors and lecturers. Many of you will be wondering what it is and what it has to do with you.

Turnitin is software which matches text, and it can be used as a tool for finding plagiarism.

When a paper is submitted to Turnitin, the text-matching technology identifies strings and patterns of words. These identifications are shown in originality reports which highlight the matching texts and use colour to measure the amount of matching.

The percentage of copied text is colour coded:

  • Blue = no matching text
  • Green = 1-24%
  • Yellow = 25-49%
  • Orange = 50-74%
  • Red = 75-100%

How do I submit my assignment?

Follow these 10 steps to submit your assignment to Turnitin:

  1. log into your LMS.
  2. go to the relevant subject page.
  3. find the assignment listed on that subject page (your lecturer should be able to tell you where).
  4. follow the prompts to enter the system.
  5. select the 'My Submissions' tab at the top of the page.
  6. enter a submission title and part (if relevant).
  7. click 'Browse' to select the file you wish to submit.
  8. check the box to confirm that the submission is your own work.
  9. you can now view your submission in the 'submission box' on the 'Summary' screen.
  10. you will receive an email confirming you have submitted your assignment.

NOTE: All files submitted to Turnitin must be text based. They cannot be scanned copies.

How to read an originality report

Originality Reports are typically completed within ten to fifteen minutes of submissions. This report generation time may vary based on the extreme levels of usage that may occur during certain periods of the academic year or due to very large submissions.
