La Trobe University
Student help - Personal Learning System (PLS) (PebblePad)

What is PebblePad

PebblePad is a personal learning system that includes an e-portfolio (electronic portfolio called a webfolio in PebblePad).

PebblePad is a web based program that offers a number of different tools to allow you to plan your work, organise evidence of your learning and record and reflect on your study.  All La Trobe students have a free PebblePad account whilst they are enrolled in a course at the University.

Watch this short animated video that explains what an e-portfolio is.

What can I do in PebblePad?

PebblePad has many uses but whilst you are at La Trobe its primary purpose will be for you to collect and create evidence of your learning in the form of journals, blogs, webfolios, photos, documents, media files and links to external web sites from PebblePad. You can then use the different types of evidence to creatively build assets in PebblePad and submit these as assessment tasks as advised by your lecturer.  Or these assets can be shared with prospective employers, the Victorian Institute of Teaching, friends or anyone else.

Your PebblePad space is password protected, all the work you do is private. When you are ready to publish an asset you send it to a gateway (more about this later) that allows your teacher or peers to view and comment on what you have released.

Simple assets that you can use in PebblePad include

  • Action plans
  • Thoughts (journals)
  • Meetings - that you are involved in
  • Experiences - that you have had
  • Achievements
  • Abilities
  • Activities

More complex assets include

  • Blogs
  • Webfolios
  • CV
  • Forms - which you may be asked to complete for your lecturer
  • Profiles - which you may be asked to complete for your lecturer

These complex assets allow you to gather the simple assets together and present your learning in a creative and progressive way. You don't need to become expert at using all of these assets. You may like to focus on only a few that are particularly relevant to you at the moment.
