Taking a Quiz

What is a Quiz?

The quiz activity iconA Quiz is a type of activity in the LMS. Your lecturer may add a quiz either for assessment or for self assessment. It is a set of questions grouped together that you answer and then obtain a grade. The lecturer has a number of options they can select when setting up a quiz, including the date and time a quiz can be taken, the number of attempts permitted, a time limit while taking the quiz and may also set a password.

How do I access a Quiz?

  1. To view the Quiz Activity, click on the Quiz Activity link (which has a tick box graphic in front of it).

  2. The Quiz information page will provide an overview of the intended purpose of the quiz, when the quiz opened and when it will close, whether there is a time limit and the Grading method.
  3. After reading the overview information and when you are ready to begin the quiz, click on the Attempt quiz now button.

Submitting your Answers

Clicking on the submit button after responding to each question not only saves the response but depending on the settings the lecturer has chosen, may enable the lecturer to provide instant feedback as to whether the response is correct or incorrect. In the screenshot below Question 4 is correct and Question 5 the student has only selected one correct response out of a possible two, the other was incorrect. The feedback from the lecturer indicates which two responses were correct.

Question Types

There are many different types of question types a lecturer can use in a quiz.

  • Essay Questions allow a student to type in a large field (the text entry area) and format the text using the formatting options in the HTLM editor (e.g. bold, font colour, bullet points etc).

  • Multiple Choice Questions (Checkbox): Multiple choice questions that have a check box to select responses may require the student to select more than one response.

  • Multiple Choice Radio Buttons and True False Questions: will only allow one answer (by selecting a single radio button).
A 'true or false' quiz question
  • Short Answer Questions may ask a question that requires a one or two word answer. These types of questions can have instant feedback from the lecturer as there is only one correct answer. These types of questions require the student to know the answer rather than selecting from available options or true/false scenarios.
