Glossary

Term: Assignments
Definition: An Assignment is a tool in the LMS allowing students to submit or resubmit written assignments via the assignment drop box.

Term: Block
Definition: A block is an area of the LMS (Moodle) screen that has been set up by your lecturer in the left and/or right sides of the main screen. Commonly used blocks may include Recent Activity, Upcoming Events, Calendar and Subject.

Term: Blog
Definition: The word blog is a contraction of Web Log. Blogs are a form of online journal and are usually organised chronologically as a series of postings by the author.

Term: Breadcrumbs
Definition: A navigational structure appearing as a line of text near the top of the page, and containing links to higher level pages than the currently displayed page.

Term: Chat
Definition: Chat is a way to interact with other participants in real time. All participants must be online at the same time. Chat text may be archived and available to be read at a later date.

Term: File
Definition: Any file type could be uploaded from your computer. Ensure that anyone you would like to access any uploaded file has access to the appropriate software.

Term: File Picker
Definition: Allows you to browse for files to your own computer or to external repositories

Term: Folder
Definition: Folder (in Topic); a placeholder for files, activities and resources

Term: Forums
Definition: A discussion forum is a place where you can participate in text-based threaded discussions with your tutor and/or other participants around subject-specific topics.

Term: Glossary
Definition: An activity in which students can add names and definitions. You can link to the Glossary from anywhere in your LMS subject

Term: LMS
Definition: Learning Management System (LMS). La Trobe University has used WebCT as its enterprise LMS since 2000. Moodle replaces WebCT as the University's centrally supported LMS in 2011 and nearly all subjects taught at La Trobe have transferred to the new LMS (Moodle). A small number of subjects began teaching before the switch-over to Moodle, so will continue on WebCT for the remainder of 2011.

Definition: Moodle was originally an acronym for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment.

Term: Moodle.org
Definition: moodle.org is the main Moodle website, which includes forums for discussing anything and everything about Moodle; http://moodle.org. Please note this website is external to La Trobe University and is intended as a reference site only.

Term: News Forum
Definition: A resource that allows lecturers to make subject relevant announcements to their students. For example, exam dates and times, or to inform students that the due date for a quiz or assignment has changed.

Term: Quiz
Definition: A Quiz is a type of activity in the LMS which your lecturer can create for assessment or for study.

Term: Wiki
Definition: Some subjects will include a wiki (a collaborative webpage), which allows participants to collaborate on writing by each person in the group writing and editing in a single online document.
