Chat Activity
The Chat activity allows you to communicate in real time with other people involved in the subject. You can use Chat to engage in real-time text conversations with everyone or with a selection of individuals.
This is a useful way to get a different understanding of each other and the topic being discussed – the mode of using a chat room is quite different from the forums. The Chat module contains a number of features for managing and reviewing chat discussions. Your lecturer may use the Chat activity to provide information on online guest speakers, exam reviews and study groups, may set up Chat sessions for students to do peer tutoring, or set up chats for specific topic discussions or exam reviews.
Netiquette is a term for standards which govern computer mediated communication. As participants of online communication groups, that is, discussion, chat or email, all students are expected to observe the University’s Internet Code of Practice. So that all students may feel encouraged to participate, rude, sexist or other disparaging comments are not acceptable. Remember that discussion and chat postings can be read by all participants, and that some people in the class may have very different backgrounds, customs and experiences to your own.
