Profile

Mr Andrew Martchenko

La Trobe University, Melbourne

Course of study:
Double Degree Bachelor of Computer Science (Hons) / Bachelor of Electronic Engineering (Hons) 2006

Has your degree at La Trobe prepared you well for the workplace?

After completing a double degree in Computer Science and Electronic Engineering I felt confident entering the workplace. The double degree has a high emphasis on project work through research and design projects, this helped develop my critical thinking and problem solving skills.

The hands on experience that I gained at La Trobe cannot be emphasized enough. At every stage of the degree I was involved in a design project. Five years and 60 odd subjects later, I felt that I had the experience to take on the world.

Tell us a little about your work history

My Engineering career began while I was a student working on my final year Electronic Engineering project. I was offered a position by my industry supervisor at a start-up company called Victorian Machine Vision (VMV). After graduation, I continued to work for VMV as a field engineer where I designed, installed and maintained vision systems for machine automation.

My interest in machine vision led me to the next stage of my career; I went back to La Trobe University to complete a PhD in the area of Lossless Image Compression. As a PhD candidate I got heavily involved in teaching and research. Now I am a lecturer in the Department of Engineering.

What are things you enjoy most about your job?

Teaching is an aspect of my job that I enjoy most. Educating and influencing the minds of future engineers is immensely rewarding. I also love doing research. It is a great feeling to build on the research of great men and women, to expand on their work, and to contribute further to the body of scientific knowledge.

What advice can you offer to current students?

La Trobe will present you with many opportunities, take these opportunities, be actively involved in your degree and join the various clubs and societies and be part of our team.
