Profile

Mr Darryn Benn

BAE Systems

Course of study:
Bachelor of Electronic Engineering (Honours) & Master of Microelectronic Engineering 2010

Has your degree at La Trobe prepared you well for the workplace?

The thorough engineering background that the Department of Electronic Engineering gave me has made it a very smooth transition into the working environment. The department provided degrees with specific streams, which allowed me to focus on my passion for engineering. The larger scale projects towards the end of the degree were a great way to learn electronics in situations that simulated the work force.

Tell us a little about your work history

I started out with a three month cadetship at the Australian Synchrotron and remained there working two days a week as a Junior Electronic Engineer until the end of my degree. One of my projects was to design the schematic and PCB for a RF demodulator from a bi-directional coupler built into a 35MW high power wave guide RF distribution system.

In 2010 I began a three month job at BAE Systems as a Software/Electronic Engineer and I remain working there today. I develop and optimise hardware solutions from requirement analysis through to simulation and construction, undertaking multiple PCB designs across many projects within the program. I also undertake many design reviews of a large range of customer deliverables and actively participate in product change through verification and qualification.

What are things you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy the new and different work opportunities; you can always get your hands stuck into something different. During my career I have networked with other external engineers, travelled overseas and interstate to visit customers and have been able to undertake a project from design concept to deployment.

Besides your career, where has life taken you since graduation

Since my graduation I have been able to buy a house in my local area which brings a lot of new life challenges. I have taken up road bike racing with my local club and started to tick off my “countries to visit” list.

What advice can you offer to current students?

Study hard and take every opportunity, you never know now where life can take you.
