Mr Peter Stavrou

General Electric (GE)

Course of study:
Bachelor of Electronic Engineering (Communications) 2010

Has your degree at La Trobe prepared you well for the workplace?

The hands on approach to learning at La Trobe University provided me with the technical grounding necessary to perform my role in the workforce. It gave me the skill to be able to learn on the job and confidence in my ability to take on challenging roles and projects, which have opened many doors and provided me with great experiences.

Tell us a little about your work history

I worked in manufacturing for a year after graduating, in process automation and SCADA. My first project out of university was to develop a plant-wide SCADA monitoring solution. I then found my way into the Energy industry via General Electric which has led me into power projects in the mining industry and electric utilities as well as providing me with commercial and business experience.

What are things you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy meeting new and interesting people and working on challenging and exciting projects which allow me to see parts of Australia that most people never get the chance to see in their lives.

Besides your career, where has life taken you since graduation?

Since graduating, I have had the chance to travel across Australia and internationally, meet many new people, forge new friendships along the way and experience a very small slice of what this world has to offer.

What advice can you offer to current students?

The world really is your oyster. Buckle down at university, make a 5-10 year plan for yourself, figure out where you want to go (which industry sector for example) and identify the path you need to take to get there. Don't wait for the opportunity to come to you, seek out the opportunity and seize it!
