Bachelor of Electronic Engineering 2011

Has your degree at La Trobe prepared you well for the workplace?

Electronic Engineering at La Trobe is a well rounded degree covering a variety of technical streams, while continuing to build on Business/Project Management and communication skills.

The Technical knowledge base and analytical problem solving provided is a skill set that will hold me in good stead - no matter what industry or direction my career takes in the future.

Tell us a little about your work history

I completed a 5 month cadetship at Continental in the electronic (Hardware) R&D department. I worked closely with Senior Engineers to develop new test beds and simulators for performance checking. My work included Schematic & PCB design, along with prototyping. I also worked with the project management team, which gave great insight into another area of the company and the business environment of a large organisation.

I currently work for Emona Instruments as a Field Sales Engineer. We distribute a large range of Test and Measurement equipment (DSOs, Spectrum analysers etc.) and also Engineering Teaching equipment for most engineering disciplines. In my role, I manage Key Accounts including; Engineering and Science Departments in all Victorian universities, Defence Training Australia wide and a variety of government and industry partners.

I have had the opportunity to travel through extensively North America and Europe. I am also involved in a group of former La Trobe student’s internet start-up company – Moodswing – which is currently available in the Apple App store, and launching on Android in early 2014.

What are things you enjoy most about your job?

I love that my job enables me to be out on the road visiting customers on site and the variety that comes with the job. In one week my major tasks may involve product demonstrations and presentations to a engineering firms, and the next I may be working through a large scale equipment tender for a university.

What advice can you offer to current students?

Your degree has the potential to open up doors for you that you may never have thought possible. Work hard, use your network and take the opportunities as they come.
