Has your degree at La Trobe prepared you well for the workplace?

Education at La Trobe provided me with all necessary training and knowledge to enter the world of engineering. It gave me the opportunity to professionally prepare myself for the real challenges outside. The academic staff are very friendly and provided me with continuous support.

Tell us a little about your work history

Currently I work for Thiess as a Site Engineer and have managed various projects with our premium clients who are Telstra, INDRA Australia and Air services Australia. As a site engineer I am responsible for the day-to-day site activity, assisting with quality and safety audits, identifying the highest possible risk and taking necessary action to overcome the risk, following up with project engineers to ensure the work has been carried out as per designed drawing and actively monitoring the work environment for potential hazards.

I am also involved in preparing background information for project implementation and preliminary work plans including reviewing the construction design, pricing and coordinating different phases of projects.

My biggest career highlights were being part of the National ERRP project (Enroute Radar Replacement Project) and National NAVEX 2B Project with INDRA Australia and the National DVOR Hatch and Ladder Project with Air Services Australia.

What are things you enjoy most about your job?

The advantage of being a site engineer is being able to travel to many parts of Australia during the site work and getting to meet different people around Australia. After all the hard work at the site under sun and rain, the moment when the client gives positive feedback makes up for everything.

What advice can you offer to current students?

Make use of all positive opportunities that La Trobe offers.
