Staff Orientation

Welcome to the University

Paul JohnsonI am delighted to welcome you to La Trobe University, and hope that you will enjoy a long and successful career in the University.

You are joining the University at a crucial time for higher education in Australia. Changing times mean changing roles and responsibilities for the universities and for their staff.

In the past ten years the University has developed significantly. Once there was a single campus in Melbourne at Bundoora, but today La Trobe stretches through regional Victoria with campuses at Albury-Wodonga, Beechworth, Bendigo, Mildura and Shepparton.

The University remains a unity, however, and your contribution will be equally vital wherever you are based.

Universities of the twenty-first century are set to pursue an increasingly diversified mission - and they must, of course, become fully internationalised. I am confident that La Trobe is meeting the new challenges successfully. Internationally the University is a leader with many offshore programs and with more than 150 agreements with universities overseas.

Naturally, no university can fulfil its aspirations without the energy and dedication of an excellent staff.

I should like to assure you that your contribution will be highly valued.

In the Beginning

New employees will need to have their personal details and salary information entered onto the payroll system before they get paid. A staff number is generated when your details are entered onto the SAP payroll system by a Human Resources officer. If you return your paperwork before you commence, then it is likely that the staff number would have been generated by the time the new employee commences.

On commencement, the new employee should telephone;

Bundoora - Human Resources on 9479 1622, 9479 2030 or 9479 1623;
Bendigo - Human Resources on 054447470;
Other campuses - the new employee's supervisor

to make an appointment in order to complete a number of formalities. The appropriate forms should be completed before making the appointment and these may include the Employee Advice form, UniSuper form with tax file number included, Tax File Number Declaration, Withholding Declaration and these should be brought to the appointment. The new employee's details will be added to the SAP system and a staff number will be generated. Once the new employee is provided with the staff number they can contact Information and Communication Technology to be provided with an account for logging onto their computer and for accessing the Staff OnLine.
