The award for outstanding service to the Bendigo campus is presented to La Trobe University staff who have demonstrated long-standing leadership, service and commitment to the campus and University.

Award recipients receive a mounted silver medallion which was struck in 1923 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Bendigo School of Mines, an antecedent of La Trobe University. The medallion serves as a reminder of the traditional importance of education to the growth and prosperity of Bendigo. This tradition is continued by those who serve and lead the Bendigo campus of La Trobe University with distinction.

Past recipients of the medallion include: Miss Marj Orde, Dr Max McKay, Mr Neil Ashley, Mr Dennis O’Hoy, Dr Ian MacBean, Dr Nigel Christie, Ms Lyn Wingrave, Mr Wayne Friswell, Professor Les Kilmartin, Ms Lyn Davies, Mr Brian Davey, Assoc Professor Barry Brockley, Dr Pat Horan and Mr David Stuchbery.

The following formal guidelines and protocol were established for the presentation of the medallion.

Guidelines and Protocols

Any member of the staff of the University may nominate any member of staff of the Bendigo Campus for the award.

  • (i) The nomination shall:
      a. Set out the reasons for the nomination; and
      b. Be lodged with the Campus Director.
  • (ii) The Campus Director may contact the Head of the nominee’s academic or administrative area to provide comments upon such nomination which, together with the nomination, shall then be submitted to a committee comprising the Campus Director (as Chair), one senior campus academic and one senior campus general staff member. The current committee members are Dr Andrew Harvey (Chair), Dr Katherine Legge (senior campus academic), and Peter Barton (senior campus general staff).

The committee shall take into account the nominee’s length of service to the University and the special or exceptional circumstances which make the service of such a distinguished nature as to merit an award. The nominee’s length of service shall be at least ten years unless the committee considers that exceptional circumstances exist which would justify a lesser period.

The Campus Director shall be responsible for making arrangements for the presentation of the Campus Award to the recipient.

The committee shall report to the PVC (Regional) prior to an award being made.
