'The athlete': after making my first state final while battling a cyst on my tonsil. An athlete can push through the pain and also because I upped my training levels from casual to serious.

  • State final in 100m Breaststroke at 2014 Victorian Age Short Course Championships
  • Making Open short course nationals in 2014 in the 100 and 50 Breaststroke
  • Competing at Open Victorian Championships.

At what age did you start seriously training and competing in your sport(s)?

At age 18 I started to take swimming seriously but I have been competing since I was nine. I never really took it seriously as I wanted to play many other sports, but I now focus solely on swimming.

What (and/or who) got you started in the sport?

I finished swimming lessons when I was age eight and joined a squad at Carey Pool, where I have been since 2004.

Are other family members involved in sport? If so, please outline.

My younger sister Alana who is 16 years old currently competes in Swimming at my club Ca Tritons Inc.

Who has been the biggest influence in your sporting career?

  • My parents, who have always supported me in anything I do
  • My coach Michal Strodski who is energetic and wants me to succeed
  • My former coach and good friend Gemma Davy (La Trobe student) encouraged me to take swimming more seriously which led to me qualifying for nationals.

Who has been the biggest influence in your academic life?

My parents, as they always encourage and support me with anything I do. They are always willing to help and give me advice.

Do you support any other sport and/or teams?

I support the mighty Hawks, which I have seen three premierships 2008, 2013 and 2014. I attended all three games and 2014 was my favourite of these games.

I am a keen follower of the NBA, cricket, surfing and the Australian Swimming Team.

How do you relax? Do you have other life interests outside of your sport?

Hanging out with friends, watching my mates' play football, working as Swim teacher, surfing, and watching TV.

What is one thing that might surprise readers to learn about you?

My middle name Byron is named after Byron Bay on Northern NSW coastline.

What is your favourite food?  Movie? Music/performer?

My favourite foods are chicken parma and chocolate.

What was the best advice you were ever given?

If I ever want to pursue something give it a full go - not a half measure or take short cuts.
