Spanish Program

Honours Program

Course Structure

The Spanish fourth-year honours program consists of a research essay of 15,000 words on an approved topic and two subjects at fourth-year level. Depending on staff availability, students may be able to undertake an honours program in some aspect of Hispanic, Portuguese or Catalan literature, language and/or culture.

Enrolment may be full-time (2 semesters) or part-time (up to 4 semesters). All Honours' students have the opportunity to present their research at seminars attended by other students and members of the teaching staff.

Entry Requirements

Students wishing to enter fourth-year honours in the Spanish Program will normally have completed a major in Spanish or equivalent and have at least a B-grade average in their Spanish subjects. Students considering Honours are encouraged to include additional subjects which will broaden their knowledge of Spain and/or Latin America during their undergraduate course. It is also recommendable that they enhance their language skills by studying at one of the Spanish and/or Latin American universities with which La Trobe has an exchange agreement DURING THEIR UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE, PREFERABLY AT THIRD YEAR LEVEL

Students considering honours should consult the Honours Coordinator when enrolling for their third-year, in order to plan a suitable course structure on which to base an honours year. Towards the end of the third-year, intending honours students should consult the Honours Coordinator concerning the composition of their honours year, thesis topic and supervisor.

How to Apply

If you are interested in undertaking an honours year in Spanish, you should:

  1. Discuss ideas for a thesis topic with the Honours Coordinator.
  2. Write a 200-300 word abstract of your thesis research topic (which may change later).
