Professional Involvements
John Fitzgerald graduated from the University of Sydney in 1976, spent the following year in China under the Australian-Chinese student exchange program, and completed a PhD in modern Chinese history at the Australian National University in 1983. In the same year he began work in the Contemporary China Centre of the ANU followed by a year in the Legislative Research Service of the Australian Federal Parliament. He was appointed to the History Department of Melbourne University in 1985 and undertook a Fulbright postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1988. In 1992 he joined the Department of Politics at La Trobe University where he was appointed foundation professor of Asian Studies in 1995.
Publications
My publications fall into three main fields – East Asian history and politics, Chinese-Australian history, and Western studies of Asia. Recent books include:
- Big White Lie: Chinese Australians and White Australia (Sydney: UNSW press, 2007), xiv + 298 pp.
- The Dignity of Nations: Honour, Equality and Competition in East Asian Nationalism (Hong Kong University Press 2006), co-edited with Ch’ien Yung-Xiang.
- Huanxing zhongguo (Sanlian chubanshe, 2004), a revised and translated edition of Awakening China (Stanford University Press 1997), awarded the 1998 Levenson Prize for Twentieth Century China by the US Association for Asian Studies.
- After the Rush (Otherland, 2004), co-edited with Sophie Couchman and Paul Macgregor.
- Power and Identity in the Chinese World Order: Festschrift in Honour of Professor Wang Gungwu (Hong Kong University Press, 2003), co-edited Billy KL So, Huang Jianli and James K. Chin.
- Rethinking China’s Provinces (Routledge, 2002), sole edited.
- Maximizing Australia’s Asia Knowledge: Repositioning and Renewal of a National Asset (Asian Studies Association of Australia, 2002), co-authored with Robin Jeffrey, Tessa Morris-Suzuki and Kama Maclean.
