Teaching

My teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level focuses on planning practice, social and environmental change and rural and regional planning. I also have a strong interest in student work relating to participatory planning activity and planning in developing economies.

Research Projects

My research includes investigations of the processes and practice of planning in non-metropolitan settings. In particular, I am interested in the way in which land use planners operate as professionals in a context where drivers of change often sit outside of the limits of planning action.

I am part of a research team carrying out a study of peri-urban regions in two Australian states, Victoria and Queensland. This project, entitled Change and Continuity in Peri-Urban Australia, investigates the trends, nature and extent of contemporary peri urban regions in Australia. It is a collaborative project between Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University and Griffith University, Brisbane and has been funded by Land and Water Australia. I am also presently involved in research and development of new planning tools in the Lake Eppalock Catchment as part of a project for the North Central Catchment Management Authority.

Until recently, I have been involved in the establishment of an international planner’s forum within the Irish Planning Institute. I also have an interest in planning as a tool for local sustainability in rural Australia.
