The Sociology & Politics Program is oriented to the future. We are guided by the knowledge that we are teaching a generation of people who will live through an era of unprecedented challenges, especially those of climate change. Along with ecological issues, climate change will present social and political challenges which will reach into every aspect of life – personal, professional, local, national and global. People with expertise in social and political analysis will have a very important leadership role in helping their fellow human-beings to understand and respond creatively.
Sociology and politics complement each other. Sociology is concerned with the broad study of social life and human behaviour. It examines how we are shaped by the world around us but also looks at the ways we actively create and construct our social and cultural world. Politics is concerned not only with electoral politics but also with the broad themes of power, conflict, cooperation, order, justice, community, governance and change.
Studies in Sociology & Politics can contribute to life-skills by strengthening our ability to hold realism and optimism in balance. It can equip us to make a positive contribution.
The Bachelor of Arts is currently offered at the Bendigo and Shepparton campuses.
