General Information
Sociology at La Trobe University is one of the oldest and largest sociology programs in Australia, and has among the largest postgraduate enrolments.
Sociology is part of a School that includes related disciplines of anthropology, Asian studies, legal studies and politics. This provides a unique environment in which there is a broad and diverse range of scholarship and research. This multidisciplinary environment encourages a cross fertilization of ideas and a lively, plural and diverse intellectual community.
High levels of interaction and opportunities are offered for collaborative work between staff and students. In addition to an annual graduate conference, regular graduate seminars are provided together with some funding towards graduate student presentations at national conferences. Some opportunities to gain teaching experience are also available.
Principal areas of specialisation are: Australia, Asia and the Pacific Rim, gender, family, social policy, health and illness, sociology of religion, ethnicity, work and technology, ecology and society, community studies, social theory, comparative studies of other societies, developing societies, sociology of culture and many others.
