Centenarians in AustraliaThe Australian Centenarian Study
being conducted by Dr John McCormack at La Trobe University
Short BiographyDr John McCormack has worked professionally and academically in ageing and aged care for a substantial period. He has been a discharge planner in acute and sub-acute health care, as well as a senior lecturer in health and gerontological social work. His interest in centenarians dates from 1995, and he published the first article on Centenarians in Australia in the Australasian Journal on Ageing in 2000. He has been the Australian representative on the International Database on Longevity (IDL) since 2001, and has validated the ages of half of the recorded supercentenarians in Australia. He has also participated in the third and fourth IDL Workshops on Atlanta and Montreal in 2002 and 2003. He has an ongoing quality of life study underway with Australian centenarians, and is part of the Asia/Oceania group undertaking centenarian studies. He also maintains an informal list of the oldest people, including the oldest Veteran, in Australia, and is a frequent commentator in the media on this topic. He is also currently researching what Social Workers do in Health and Aged care in Australia. He has published over fifty articles and is Australian Adviser to the Editorial Boards of two important International journals in Ageing. PapersPhotographs
