Bachelor of Social
Work (Advanced Standing)
|
This two year degree prepares students for
the practice of professional social work. The course prepares students
to be generic practitioners able to respond to the complexity of human
need and integrate the different areas and skills of social work practice
in any given work situation as required.
Students are equipped to undertake the following
key social work roles: work with individuals, families and groups; community
work; social policy; social research; and organisational planning and
administration. Units offered enable students to integrate theory and
practice. They include ideas about how individuals, families, communities
and societies operate and develop, the ethical, legal and organisational
framework, how to interpret and undertake research, and the skills needed
for the different areas of social work practice.
The curriculum of the course is based on a
philosophy of social justice, and is taught within an adult-learning model.
Students are encouraged to relate their relevant experiences to the theories
and practice presented in the program and are also expected to challenge
long-standing values and beliefs.
The course includes two placements of 70 days
(one in each year), in a professional social work agency. Students will
be required to obtain a police check prior to the commencement of each
placement.
The Bachelor of Social Work is
accredited by the Australian Association
of Social Workers.

Honours |
An honours program is available in fourth year to those
students who have achieved results of a high academic standard. Honours
students will be chosen at the end of the third year on the basis
of that year's study and invited to undertake the Honours program
in their final year. Graduates who achieved results of a high academic standard may also apply for the Honours program with a view to "converting" their pass degree to an honours degree.
In addition to specified unit requirements, Honours students are required
to prepare a research proposal and then write and submit an Honours
thesis by the end of the Honours year. |
