Project RED (Reducing Environmental Damage)

Project RED is a partnership between Mildura Rural City Council, Mildura Regional Waste Management Group, Mildura City Heart and SIFE La Trobe. The aim of this project is to reduce our community’s impact on the environment and improve the sustainability of our region’s peoples and businesses.

Project RED aims to encourage people – both residents and visitors, to have a hands-on approach to recycling outside of their homes whilst shopping in our Central Business District. Bin audits have indicated that in litres, 73% of rubbish sorted from this area was recyclable and we have the potential to divert approximately 53 tonnes of product away from landfill every year. Our team is confident that this can be achieved through education and hence we will provide posters, a display at the Visitor Information Centre and incentive vouchers to those seen to be recycling in this area.

Stage one of this project is currently underway and stage two will include climate change presentations targeted at local primary and secondary schools. Stage three is to establish a community vegetable garden at the proposed Sunraysia Community Environment Centre. In stage 4 of Project RED, we will attempt to make Mildura one of the few Australian cities to be plastic bag free.
